While I’ve been writing movie and tv show reviews for almost 2 years now, I have never done a top 5 tv shows of the year list. With the overall landscape of film/tv changing in 2021 due to COVID and cinema lovers watching content from their couches, there was some amazing tv shows released this year – so I felt obligated to write this list. As always, I hope you find a show you haven’t heard of and consider watching any of my top 5 picks. Drop a comment or send me a message if you want to chat about my list. I always love a good debate on my reviews and top 5 lists. Happy New Year!
Honorable Mention: Resident Alien Season 1
When you think of SyFy original content, you usually think corny, unrealistic, and BAD sci-fi/space movies, but Resident Alien and show front runner, Alan Tudyk has broken that cycle. Alan Tudyk plays a crash-landed alien named Harry who takes on the identity of a small-town Colorado doctor and slowly begins to wrestle with the moral dilemma of his secret mission on Earth. Throughout the show we see Alan Tudyk shine in a refreshing new take on the sci-fi drama/comedy genre.
Resident Alien is a refreshing 8.9 out of 10 and might be one of the best original shows I’ve ever seen. I was extremely impressed with sci-fi‘s ability to create original content and have it be in a top-tier category. It has something for everyone; it’s hilarious, dark, but family friendly with some emotional and light hearted moments. Alan Tudyk was phenomenal and was lights out in his role and the overall cast was phenomenal.
5. The Shrink Next Door (Mini-series)
Who knew Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell were the TV duo we needed to end 2021? Apple TV has been on an absolute tear this year and flexed their genius with their recent mini-series, “The Shrink Next Door.” Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd were TREMENDOUS in their performances and shined in these roles. While these weren’t their typical roles or their typical genre, they both gave A+ acting performances and brought this show to life.
“The Shrink Next Door” is an unsettling 8.9 out of 10. You never really know what you’ll get when a show or movie says it’s “based on a true story,” but “The Shrink Next Door” delivered on that front. It was historically accurate (which is always a huge plus) and Paul Rudd/Will Ferrell even looked identical to their real world characters. The entire story is unsettling, frustrating, and anxiety-inducing. Both Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell give perfect performances and make this one of Apple TV’s BEST shows to date.
4. Succession Season 3
It seems like I waited the whole pandemic for season 3 of Succession to drop and to my surprise, it finally did. HBO-Max blessed fans to end 2021 with their third installment of the highly anticipated and beloved show which features another strong season from the entire cast. When you strike gold in a tv show in the early seasons, it can often be hard to live up to the brilliance as the show progresses through the seasons. While season 3 of Succession is fantastic television, I do feel let down compared to the previous 2 seasons. Not to take away from what they did in season 3, it’s just a little more dry and not as drama-packed as the previous seasons. Now I understand that these writers know what they’re doing and I know that the payoffs in season 4 are going to be phenomenal so I can’t be too upset, but when they’ve been able to succeed at great television in the moment while building for future seasons, it’s a little disappointing when it’s not as perfect as it was.
Succession is an absurd and astonishing 8.9 of the 10 and is one of the best shows to be released this year. While we all don’t really like any of the characters on the show (especially not Cousin Gregg), I’ll be the first to give flowers to the entire cast’s performances this season. Jeremy Strong deserves TV actor of the year for his acting, especially in the last three episodes of the season. His heartfelt and tear-jerking acting to end the season only solidifies why I love his role on the show and why season three is amazing television. While it might be unfair to only compare season 3 Succession’s previous seasons, this season was slower than the two previous ones and you can argue that while “nothing actually happened” until the last episode, Succession continues to shine in its ability to take you inside the drama of the Roy family and keep you on the edge of your couch. When it comes down to 2021 shows, season 3 of Succession is almost as good as it gets and should be on your watch list if you’ve seen the previous seasons. If you aren’t caught up, well it’s time to start binge-watching HBO’s flawless new series in Succession.
3. Ted Lasso Season 2
Season 2 of Apple TV’s award winning show, Ted Lasso kicked off right where the first season left it. We got a more in depth look into our main characters. We fell in love with new characters and began to hate old ones. While season 1 will ALWAYS be hard to beat, season 2 gave us the same greatness we saw and showed us why Ted Lasso is one of the best television shows currently running. The entire cast is flawless and the writing/dialogue adds so much authenticity to the show. I don’t think I’ve fallen in love with the cast and their characters as much as I have with Ted Lasso. Jason Sudeikis and company have outdone themselves and continue to reinvent modern tv with the latest season.
Season 2 of Ted Lasso is a masterpiece and a 9.0 out of 10. The plot and character development this season were top tier and were hard to beat. While it is a little inappropriate (mostly just Roy Kent), it has something for every one and is one of the best tv seasons I’ve seen this year. I said it after season 1 and I’ll say it again now, if you’re a sports fan, you need to add Ted Lasso to your watch list. Once you start it, you won’t be able to stop until you finish. If you’ve watched the first season but not the second, it’s time to dive in and enjoy.
2. DAVE (FX) Season 2
While the world has been waiting for Donald Glover and company to release the new season of “Atlanta”, a new sensation has taken over with Lil Dicky’s season 2 of FX’s “Dave”. Season 1 left us intrigued, excited, wanting more, and most importantly, dying for its second season. Luckily for fans of Lil Dicky and “Dave”, season 2 exceeded all expectations and was a masterpiece season of television. Everything about season 2 is as close to perfection as you can want on television. From amazing and true to life acting, to well crafted dialogue, to somehow having a better guest cast than season 1, season 2 is original, refreshing and NEEDS to be watched ASAP. Not only is it an amazing season of TV, but it enhances the life of Lil Dicky and scratches the itch “Atlanta” has given us, but takes it to a new level.
Season 2 of Dave is an impeccable, hilarious, and authentic 9.5 out of 10. Not many shows have the detail, precision, and attitude that Dave has, but it pays off and gives us “the best television show of the year” – Blair Altland. If you’re a fan of “Atlanta ”, “Dave” is 1000% worth the watch and should be binged ASAP. It definitely has its moments of being wayyyyy inappropriate for cable TV, but “Dave” masters the science of mixing comedy, story telling, and drama into one complete package. I loved everything about it and can’t wait until season 3 is here. Hopefully in the meantime, Lil Dicky will bless fans with his fake (or real) album “Penith”.
1. Invincible Season 1 (Brady’s TV Show of the Year)
Amazon struck gold with their new adult animated superhero series, “Invincible” which follows seventeen-year-old Mark Grayson, whose father is the most powerful superhero on the planet. As Mark develops powers of his own, he must choose what type of hero he wants to be, while balancing teenage life with his newfound responsibilities as a superhero. Featuring a star studded cast of voice actors including Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, Zazie Beetz, Seth Rogen, and more; Invincible is one of the most exciting new shows I’ve seen in the last few years.
Invincible is a powerful 9.8 out of 10. I haven’t been this excited about an animated series since Bojack Horseman debuted on Netflix in 2014. The 8 episode season is phenomenal from start to finish and is one of the most raw, exciting, and original animated shows I’ve ever seen. Despite being an animated series, Invincible shows the true destruction and death that living in a world with superheros would bring. The originality and uniqueness is refreshing and demands praise of what Amazon and Robert Kirkman have been able to do. While the overall plot of season 1 was a bit predictable, the journey to get there was amazing and features dark humor, emotional dialogue, relatable characters, and adult themes that explore purpose, family, destiny and self love. It’s an absolute must watch from the jump and with seasons 2 and 3 in the works, Invincible deserves all of the praise it’s received so far this year. Stop what you’re doing right now and start watching, I guarantee you’ll be hooked after the 1st episode.
