“Windfall” (2022) Movie Review

Streaming sites have been dominating recent movie releases, which has led me to Netflix’s newest thriller film, “Windfall”. Starring Jason Segel, Jesse Plemons, and Lily Collins, Netflix takes a super simplistic approach to the thriller genre by creating a dramatic film featuring ONLY three incredible actors and doubles down on their commitment to high quality acting and above average dialogue/character development. I’ve been a huge Jason Segel fan since his “How I Met Your Mother” days and his lack of appearances in major films makes his acting skills in this film even more enjoyable. All three actors give great performances that help push along the dramatic plot. Segel, Plemons, and Collins performances are authentic and enjoyable. More films need to adopt “Windfalls” method of having a few actors.

“Windfall” is a surprisingly dramatic 7.0 out of 10 and while it’s nothing amazing or of award winning quality, it’s worth the watch and is a super refreshing watch. Most movies in the last few years elect to go with high production and extravagant special effects, but “Windfall” gives us the opposite, which pays off in a big way. I will say that if Jason Segel and Jesse Plemons weren’t in the movie and if they had gone for a less star studded cast, it wouldn’t have had the same watch value. It’s a relatively  short movie and it’s so simple at its core. The overall plot is decent and has a semi-dramatic twist at the end that pays off. If you have Netflix and enjoy these actors’ previous work, it’s worth throwing on and watching. It’s not going to be anyone’s movie of the year, but it’s dramatic and much better than I thought it was going to be.
